An independent knowledge partner you will really benefit from

A country where people feel safe and where things proceed fairly. A resilient society, with residents who can cope with a setback and are comfortable adapting to changes. A world in which everyone has a place and is able to develop. The Centre of Expertise (CoE) for Safety & Resilience supports professionals working to achieve those goals every day. By bringing together practice-based research, education and practice, we are jointly working to bring the world closer to that ideal, little by little.

Researching, not judging

In a time in which the gap between government and citizens seems to be growing all the time, in which disadvantaged young people are pressurised into engaging in criminal activities and in which we are barely able to keep up with technological progress, the researchers at the Centre of Expertise for Safety & Resilience are driven by optimism and a sincere ‘desire to understand’. Not judging but researching what is needed to keep the Netherlands safe, equitable and resilient – that’s what drives us. Sharing knowledge is our way of contributing to solutions to the complex challenges facing our society. In doing so, we are aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations.

Practice-based research

The Centre of Expertise for Safety & Resilience is the pre-eminent knowledge partner for organisations that believe in innovation and improvement. The research we conduct with them is always practice-based: the organisations and professionals involved really benefit from it. We believe that resilient, adaptable professionals are the bedrock of a strong society: by supplying them with reliable knowledge, we enable them to work with citizens to make a difference.

Forward-thinking education

The students of Avans University of Applied Sciences also benefit from our research. They are assured of genuinely evidence-based and relevant education that evolves with developments in society and leads the way in gathering new insights.

Knowledge programme

The Centre of Expertise for Safety & Resilience has a multi-year knowledge programme built around three themes: A Safe Society, Resilient Citizens and Cities & Technology for Safety and Resilience. The programme is geared to the knowledge requirements of Noord-Brabant and benefits from Avans’ unique in-house educational expertise. In this programme, we combine our knowledge of safety, public administration, the social sciences, welfare, area development, ICT and applied technology.

Nine research groups

Our nine research groups (research teams) work closely with their external partners and our study programmes to determine the focus of their practical research and how they will share the knowledge generated. All our professors have a strong pioneering spirit, reaching out beyond their own fields of research to establish connections and drawing on extensive experience of joint research projects. Many of them are highly active in prominent national and international networks. Together we learn more: this guiding principle sums up the strengths of the Centre of Expertise for Safety & Resilience. Our work has an impact, both in our own region and far beyond.
